Gagged! Well, what a farce today’s continuation of the adjourned Budget meeting was. For a Mayor who campaigned on accountability and transparency, there certainly wasn’t much of that on display today. Councillors including myself were not allowed to speak against the budget and were shut down by the Mayor. BRC Budget Meeting 2nd June 2026. Todays Budget meeting was a bit of a “Non-Event”. The Meeting was suddenly shut down by the Mayor 19 minutes into the agenda, with only 1 item debated and voted on. The Mayor out of the blue then presented a motion to adjourn the meeting until the 9th of June, which was voted on and passed 6 for 5 against. Emergency coastal protection work is currently underway at Lassig St foreshore Moore Park Beach, with heavy machinery operating for up to three weeks and temporary closures in place, including the Lassig Street carpark.

Well, here’s something I have never seen before, Council releasing proposed Budget information before the budget is adopted or any resolution in place and while Budget deliberations are still underway. The final draft budget hasn’t even been discussed by Council yet! Passive Persuasion Perhaps? To ensure Councillors vote a particular way? This Councillor certainly won’t be Persuaded! MPB Foreshore Footpath Replacement works It is great to see that the footpath on the foreshore in front of the Caravan Park at MPB that washed out in the weather event last year has been replaced. The new path has also been repositioned closer to the property boundary away from the Ocean edge to prevent any further issues that may be caused by coastal erosion in this area. Hopefully this will last for many years and never need replacing again due to coastal erosion.

Moore Park Beach Wetlands Bridge Update 17/4/26 Not good news, I am afraid, Tenders have been received for the replacement of this bridge and they have come in way above the allocated budgeted amount. What will happen now, is staff will revisit the proposed design of the new bridge and review the scope of works to see where cutbacks can be made if possible. They are also looking at whether it is possible to rebuild the existing bridge as a more cost-effective option. The pro

Heales Road has been upgraded to a two-lane standard and fully sealed. Line marking works are still to be completed and will recommence soon, as they were postponed due to last week’s flood event. This road was in desperate need of an upgrade and is a vast improvement on what was previously in place.

A big shout out to everyone that have come forward to do their bit to ensure that our Region is cleaned up after the big flood. The say that the worst of times brings out the best in people and this couldn’t be truer at the moment across our Region. It is great that so many residents of MPB are keen and willing to undertake cleaning up of debris and flood rubbish from the Beach and foreshore area at Moore Park Beach, but the question has been what do we do with the rubbish that we collect. Bundaberg Regional Council in conjunction with Active Skip Bins will be providing skip bins for the disposal of any rubbish collected from the beach. It has been a time of upheaval and change in Council, well the last nearly two years have been, but the new structure is now in place and hopefully a new norm will soon emerge, and we will be able to get back to delivering for the community.
