The Weekly Q? 8/9/22

This week we will be having an extra “Weekly Q” question due to the curiosity & interest surrounding this project and everyone wanting to know more.

Q- What’s the truth behind the ANZAC Park Redevelopment?

ANZAC Park Redevelopment.

In June, We (Bundaberg Regional Council) stated that -

“The revitalisation of the Bundaberg riverside has been given certainty as Bundaberg Regional Council confirms it will move forward with the Anzac Park redevelopment.”

This is now becoming a reality with demolition works on the old facilities well underway.

The Anzac Park Redevelopment has been discussed for many years and many proposals over that time have been considered for the site.

Council undertook comprehensive community and stakeholder consultation when the current plan for the site was developed in 2018.

Funds have been allocated in the 2022/2023 budget to ensure that Anzac Park redevelopment can progress asap.

Council has made the decision to progress the redevelopment after a project analysis revealed the significant financial impact of further delaying the project.

The redeveloped Anzac Park precinct will protect and enhance the Anzac legacy and help to ensure that more people are utilising this beautiful and central area.

The Anzac Park redevelopment is a legacy project which will have long-lasting social, economic and wellbeing benefits for the entire region.

The existing Anzac Pool has been a much-loved community facility in its 66 years but is at the end of its life and needs major work to make it conform to today’s standards.

The new Aquatic Centre will provide the region with new state of the art, modern, conforming facilities, that will be a fitting replacement for the old pool.

Council certainly hoped that the new aquatic facility would be built prior to the closure of Anzac Pool but we’ve been fortunate to secure $5 million from the Federal Government towards the Anzac Park redevelopment which brought forward our timeline.

Council would have loved these projects to flow together but we need to be mindful of limiting costs to ratepayers and therefore we must take these opportunities when offered by other levels of government.

The Anzac Park Redevelopment is something that the Bundaberg RSL has been advocating for since 2010 (see ABC News article attached) and their input of ideas and requirements for the site, has contributed to the development of the final plan which is very close to the original plan and vision they proposed.

When complete, the New Anzac Park Precinct will be an area that not only protects and enhances the Anzac Legacy but will be an area of remembrance and honour for all that have served.

I am confident that the majority of our community are in favour of this project and that everyone will be supportive when the Anzac Park Redevelopment is complete, and they see the end result.

Council has received a petition titled Save ANZAC Pool, the petition will be received and noted at the September Ordinary meeting.

The petition contained nearly 1400 signature in total.

FYI: A quick analysis found postcode 4670 showed up 464 times, Brisbane 752, Melbourne 41, Sydney 62, Adelaide 16 and Perth 18. These numbers show that 66% of petitioners aren’t Bundaberg residents. Of our residents, 18 and over (79354 according to the 2021 census data) less than 1% signed the petition, (.58%).
